SUMMARY The Captain is a Supervisory nonexempt position that reports to the Assistant Chief. Supervises and coordinates the activities of Fire Specialists and Firefighter/Paramedics assigned to a specific shift and volunteer members. Will be assigned additional duties of training, public education, fire prevention, or support services.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Primary duty of responding to and commanding emergency incidents.
Inspects station house, buildings, grounds, and facilities, and examines fire apparatus and equipment, such as ladders and hoses, to ensure compliance with departmental maintenance standards.
Responds to fire alarms and determines from observation the nature and extent of fire, condition of building, danger to adjacent buildings, and source of water supply, and directs firefighting crews accordingly.
Trains subordinates in use of equipment and methods of extinguishing all types of fires.
Evaluates shift personnel every June.
Inspects commercial establishments in assigned district and reports fire hazards or safety violations to the Fire Prevention Officer.
Compiles report of each emergency incident, listing the location, type, probable cause, estimated damage, and disposition.
Responds to emergency calls as Incident Commander.
Recommends corrective measures for fire hazards or safety violations to building owners.
Conducts fire drills for occupants of buildings.
Supervises and coordinates activities of fire companies fighting multiple alarm fire until relieved by superiors.
Writes and submits requests for new equipment or modification of existing equipment to superiors.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Directly supervises the regular full-time shift employees assigned to his/her shift and any volunteer members who are serving time on his/her shift. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the shift. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, making recommendations for hiring, training employees, planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) to obtain the position.
To advance through the four Levels within this rank, a Captain must successfully complete those courses of study listed in the District's Career Development Program.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Shall possess certification according to NFPA 1001 Standard at no less than the Firefighter-I level.
Shall hold licensure from the State of Missouri at no less than the EMT-B level.
Shall hold hazardous materials certification at no less than the Operations level.
Shall possess a valid Operator's driver's license from the State of Missouri.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; and risk of electrical shock. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, toxic or caustic chemicals, explosives, risk of radiation, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
