180 Nepotism: Work Assignments, Relatives
Effective Date:
Revision Date:
District employees and/or volunteer members shall not be related to other District employees or members by affinity. This District shall not hire new employees or accept volunteer members who are related to current employees or volunteer members through affinity.
If current employees or volunteer members should marry, then one must resign his/her position with the District. If the employees or volunteer members cannot agree which one will resign, then the one with the lowest seniority must resign.
Employees and/or volunteer members who are employed and related to another employee or volunteer member by affinity on 6/21//2004 are exempt from the initial paragraph of this policy.
When relatives are employed by or are volunteer members of this District, non-emergency work assignments shall be such that one employee will not directly or indirectly supervise their relative. It is understood that this requirement would be restrictive and perhaps impractical but if at all possible, attempts should also be made during emergency situations.
In emergency situations, this desire is based solely on safety and the possible loss to family members rather than any issue of fairness.
Relatives who are employees shall be placed on separate shifts unless specifically requested, in writing, to the Fire Chief. If the Fire Chief approves, the relatives must be placed at different station assignments. Volunteer members who are related shall not serve their required station and/or training time together. Volunteer members who are related to employees of the District shall not serve their required station and/or training time on the same shift as their related employee of the District.
